LO: To explore the aims and conventions of film posters.

franchise: a collection of related films in succession that share the same fictional universe, or are marketed as a series.

distributor: A film distributor is responsible for the marketing of a film. The distribution company may be the same with, or different from, the production company.

hollywood major: Major film studios are production and distribution companies that release a substantial number of films annually and consistently command a significant share of box office revenue in a given market.

teaser: A teaser trailer (or simply a teaser) is a short trailer and a form of teaser campaign advertising that focuses on film and television programming. It is a videography pre-release film or television show advertisement. Short in length, teaser trailers contain little material from the advertised content to be released.

montage: A montage is a French term meaning "assembling shots" or "putting together". It is a film technique for putting together a series of short shots that create a composite picture. A montage can be described as a series of separate images, moving or still, that are edited together to create a continuous sequence.

ensemble cast: In film and TV, an ensemble role is one in which a performer is assigned approximately the same amount of screen time as other principal performers. While a normative casting model assigns a lead role for the protagonist character, ensemble casts democratize casting by granting all major characters equal screen time.

tentpole film: a big-budget movie whose earnings are expected to compensate the studio for its less profitable movies.

high-concept: In filmmaking, the term “high concept” refers to a type of movie with a simple yet compelling premise. Typically, a high-concept film has the chance of mass audience appeal. Learn about examples of high-concept films and tips for writing a high-concept screenplay.

enigma: The enigma code in media studies is a theory related to the efficacy of presenting a story or an advertisement. The enigma code contends that if the story or ad is framed as a mystery, the audience will be interested and want to solve the mystery through subsequent stories or ads.

1. Universal Pictures, Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros., Walt Disney Studios, and Sony Picture

2. generate excitement, give a little bit away, and excite and entice audiences to actually watch your film.

3. press releases, advertising campaigns, merchandising, franchising, media and interviews with the key people involved in making the film, such as the films actors and directors.

4. The main purpose of poster design is to convey the theme and content of the film, as well as to promote important information about the film. The elements of a movie poster include various visual communication elements such as graphic images, colors, and text.

5. Typically, for high budget films, the earliest posters will be released way in advance of the movie. These posters are designed to whet the appetite and whip up frenzy for the film. These are the 'Teaser' posters. Typically, a teaser poster will be quite sparse and contain very little information about the film.

CONTEXT FOR NTTD

No time to die is a James Bond film that was released in the UK on 30 September 2021, staring Daniel Craig as 007, as his fifth and last film. This move was pushed back because of the pandemic. Making it the most expensive 007 film to date and grossed over $774 million worldwide at box office.

HOMEWORK

James Bond was inspired by a World War II secret agent F.F.E his name was Yeo- Thomas and it was also inspired by the Serbian double agent Dusko Popov. The James Bond franchise was written by Ian Fleming.
The timeline for the James Bond franchise is as follows:

  • Dr. No (1962)
  • From Russia with Love (1963)
  • Goldfinger (1964)
  • Thunderball (1965)
  • You Only Live Twice (1967)
  • On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969)
  • Diamonds Are Forever (1971)
  • Live and Let Die (1973)
The main character in James Bond, is James Bond or sometimes is referred to as '007' which is his agent number and is what he is referred to in the movies. The typical story timeline in James Bond is James' character development and how he is always sent on the hardest missions and always is able to achieve the goal. The main theme seen throughout this franchise is always 'good triumphs over evil'.
The previous actors of James Bond are as seen here:

Sean Connery
 David Niven
 George Lazenby
Roger Moore
 Timothy Dalton
 Pierce Brosnan
 Daniel Craig.

The main target audience are males because he is aspirational and men want to be him because he has a life that most males, stereotypically want to be in that that role. The reason that James Bond can possibly be appealing to women is because of his masculine image.
An interesting fact about the James bond franchise is that in the novels, James Bond became 007 at 38. Out of the various actors that have played the role, Daniel Craig is the only one to have earned his '00' status at the same age. 20. The title of Spectre is an anagram for 'Special Executive for Counter-intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion'.

Film posters

LO: to analyse the film poster set texts effectively.

The montage design, where separate images are laid over each other, references previous Bond films, providing a sense of familiarity, nostalgia and pleasure to fans who recognise the link. The 007 gun logo acts as an intertextual link between No Time To Die and previous Bond films. It has become synonymous with Bond.

It is significant that there is no intertextual reference to Ian Fleming (the author of the Bond books) on this poster - this is a departure from previous Bond films this suggests that the movie is not related to the book.

The locations shown in the poster is a city in the mountains and a bar in Cuba, this connotates that the James Bond movie is in exotic areas and this suggests that there is going to be travelling in the action movie.

Propp's character roles is the villain and can be shown in the masked character as they are presented as evil. This is shown by the gun and the mask as he is possibly wanting to conceal his identity. The hero is also shown on this poster, we can see this because of the fact he is the largest person and has the most emphasis on him instead of the other characters further proving he is the main character.

James Bond is an action her who, since the 1960's, has been constructed to embody historical masculine stereotypes such as strength, skill independence, etc.

The representation of women in the franchise has also historically been stereotypical: 'Bond Girls', who are the beautiful 'love interest' for Bond, are often insignificant to the narrative and ultimately disposable (Propp's 'princess')

The representation of gender in the Bond franchise has evolved over time, to an extent, in a bid to reflect the changing social context. It would be useful to reconsider the poster for The Man with The Golden Gun (1947) here.

Craig's Bond is not as sexist and overly stereotypical as the earlier incarnations of the character and reflects some comteporary notions of masculinity as his Bond is older, more thoughtful and shows signs of vulnerability. The poster, however, needing to communicate the genre and franchise quickly, only lightly reflects some of these character developments and continues to represent Bond as the familiar action hero.

Hollywood's representation of race and ethnicity has shifted significantly over the decades. Mainstream audience expectations have changed because of numerous events and individuals. Two of the most significant events to prompt audiences to question what they are seeing in Hollywood was the #OscarsSoWhite campaign in 2016, and the killing of a black, American man, George Floyd, by the police force in 2020. The latter ignited a wave of US and global protests, which challenged long-established symbols of racism.

I can see a stereotypical bond girl in this poster (dress), and a stereotypical geek (glasses) and also a stereotypical action hero multiple times throughout this poster, I can also see a stereotypical villain (mask and gun).

The representations of gender in this poster are seen as Women are an equal to men in this movie as there is evidence of a female spy underneath the main character, meaning that the female character will have a crucial part inside of the story of this Bond movie. Shows shift in hollywood to make women more important than before.

The representations of ethnicity are proven with how we can see more ethnic people than white people, this means that ethnicity is more important than non- ethnic people. Very few people of colour have been shown on the cover in the post so representing a black girl as the new 007 shows the change in film.

the representations of age are proven by how we can see the different amount of age groups correlating to the person on this poster. When he is shown as retired he is seen as older than conventional bonds as they all seemed to be young and youthful.

The representations of sexuality are shown as an heteronormative storyline.

Film Poster

LO: To analyse a historical film poster effectively.

Roger Moore, second time as bond, was based on a book of the same name and produced by the same company, 7 million dollar budget and made over 97 million. martial arts films like this were very popular at the time like movies such as Jackie chan and bruce lee, the artwork for this poster was made by Robert McGinnis, the film was set in 1973 during the energy crisis, when the oil was producing arab nations proclaimed an oil embargo.

1. this to show multiple interpretations of what is going to happen throughout the movies.

2. the connotations of him being placed centrally is to show that James bond is the main character. His gun is used to represent a possible danger throughout the movie his costume represents he is a spy, his facial expression is serious meaning that this is a serious mission.

3. the gold on the gun represents wealth and the 007 on the bullet and the way it is aimed at James bond represents they are trying to kill James Bond.

4. appeals to fans of roger moore, appeals to ian flemming fans

5. Who is he man with the golden gun, why does he want to kill james bond, why is the gun golden, why is there an explosion,

6. hero, villain, princess,

7. guns, fire, explosions, showing different places

Exam style question

images: In this poster the images create meanings by having James Bond centered as this is indicated he is the main character, however the Golden gun in this poster is proven to be what should be the thing that kills Bond as the bullet is engraved with the numbers '007' which is a clear indication the bullet is made for James Bond as his spy code number is '007'. The explosions and use of guns in this poster is a clear indication this is somewhat type of an action film, however the use of different places on this poster indicates that this is an adventure genre type of movie also.

Homework:

The James Bond poster uses images to shown hidden messages by showing weapons such as guns being held by different characters and also the cars being shown also shows this and thiis shows it belongs to the action genre. This is used to be a form of promotional tool to appeal to the target audience of people that like action movies. The poster shows meanings through images to represent some of James bond's old character stereotypes.

This poster uses mise en scene to create meanings by showing many areas in the poster with some urban and some more natural areas. This is used to show the audience that this movie is under the action adventure genre with indications of action and adventure being shown in this poster.

Representation context

Many film depictions of minority ethnic groups supported to be dominant stereotypes of the time.

whilst society had been progressing towards racial equality by the 1970's, some of these stereotypes were still in evidence in mainstream films.

additionally, it is interesting to consider this poster in the context of the move towards gender equality and increased women's rights in the 1960's and 70's

Stereotypes: The stereotypes shown in this poster are mainly of women as women were merely seen as objects instead of actual people as they were seen as weak and not powerful.

Representations of gender: the representations of gender are as follows: women are seen as hot young and white aside from men where the men are very well dressed in this poster where as the girls are barley clothed and are in bikinis. Women are also sexually objectified in this (male gaze theory).

Representations of ethnicity: with all actors in mainstream hollywood films being predominantly white, this matches the dominant ideology of the time. the women being seen as a fighter wasn't very stereotypical at the time.

Representations issues and events: the global oil crisis.

Film industry

LO: to explore the process of film making.

Some big film companies (conglomerates) will complete all three processes for a film. This is known as vertical integration.

This is a good thing for companies that can do it as you can get a lot more profit for it than if you were to hire them individually.

pre-production: During pre-production you will finalise your script, hire your cast and crew, scout locations, find equipment and build a shooting schedule. It is therefore imperative that this essential planning stage is well-managed. Let's take a look at the most important things you need to know about pre-production.

production: The production stage, also known as principal photography, is when shooting begins. During this short timeframe, additional crew will be hired—like a script supervisor to check for script continuity while filming, and a property master to acquire and oversee any of your film's props.

post-production: In television, the phases of post-production include: editing, video editing, colour correction, assembly, sound editing, re-recording, animation and visual effects insertions, combining separately edited audio and video tracks back together, delivery for broadcast.

Distribution is the process of making copies of the film for cinemas, VOD (video on demand), DVD and SDV (streaming and digital video) release and marketing and promotion.

Sometimes producers will take there films to festivals in order to persuade distribution companies to take on their films.

Sometimes a conglomerate (large company that owns smaller companies in other areas of the industry) will delegate the distribution to a smaller company that they own. This is called vertical integration.

Marketing and promotion:

Every institution, within every media industry, has one important task above all others. TO MAKE A PROFIT! The more money you make (revenue), the more you can invest in other movies.

A film's success is largely judged upon how much money it makes at the BOX OFFICE A.K.A bums on seats in cinemas.

Bond is an established franchise which has backers (financers) lining up to either advertise a product within the film via product placement or finance part of the film.

Films are very expensive to make. For instance, te budget for 'NTTD' was £214 million!

Exhibition and regulation

LO: To explore exhibition and regulation in the film industry.

Exhibition:

Exhibition (circulation) is the process of exhibiting (showing) the film across a range of different media platforms.

Historically this used to only include cinema release, but as digital technology evolves so does the way in which we watch films.

order it goes in:
1. cinema release
2.DVD release, Pay per view/ video on demand - recently DVD and PPV/ VOD have been released SIMULTANEOUSLY as audiences are becoming more demanding and turning more to digital download.
3. Free to air television (available on standard TV channels for free to the viewer).

In the last few years there has been a change in the way audiences/ viewers consume (watch) film. The rise of netflix, Amazon prime and other streaming sites has made film more easily accessible to viewers. They can stream digital copies straight to their TV, laptops, tablets, and phones (soon to include smart watches and Google glass). This is known as SDV (streaming and digital video).

Regulation

Film and video releases in the UK are the most tightly regulated.

Age restrictions are placed on all commercially released films by the BBFC and some are even expected to make cuts or alter the film in some way to conform to the guidelines

When classifying films the BBFC consider:

Context
themes
tone and impact
depiction of discrimination
depiction of drug use
depiction of sex and nudity
use of language
depiction of threat and violence
depiction of imitable behaviour

1. 12A. 12, moderate violence and infrequent strong language.

2. a lot of teenagers above the ages of twelve can see the movie and this attracts the main target audience of action fans that like the james bond series

3. Digital age ratings are age ratings that classify if a piece of media is appropriate for a certain age rating. This is relevant to the regulation of NTTD as this could prevent traumatic experience for younger audiences.
